CLIMATE IMPACTS ON ROOF MATERIALS

The roof of a house is at the mercy of nature all year round. If you choose the right product, you can extend the life of your roof and make the interior more comfortable.

And don’t forget the importance of insulating the roof! You can order your insulation along with your roof sheet order. You can call us on 9791 5355, or email us today at sales@rscentre.com.au

Element Considerations
Rain
  • It is helpful to know the expected rainfall in the area, as roof profiles have different water carrying capacity. This information is available through Bureau of Meteorology
  • Water will move more slowly on a lower pitch roof than a higher pitch roof, therefore you need a higher rib height to accommodate a greater water capacity
  • On a flat roof water can pool, and this can cause corrosion
  • The deeper the corrugations in the roof sheet, the more water it will hold
  • A roof pitch under 5° is not suited to a corrugated profile (exception of Custom Orb accent 35, custom orb accent 21) due to the lower rib height
  • Concealed fix profile is not penetrated with screws reducing the risk of leaks
Wind
  • In high wind conditions, a roof can fail at the seam. Therefore, the more seams, the more likely a roof will be damaged from wind.
  • The level of exposure to wind will depend on several factors including site topography. A higher roof pitch in more exposed sites may reduce pressure (we strongly recommend talking to an experienced roofer or builder who will take all site factors into consideration)
Coastal
  • Locations along the coast are subject to a highly corrosive environment. Roof sheets will likely need to be made from more durable material such as Colorbond ULTRA.
Hail
  • Metal roofs can suffer cosmetic effects from hail although it is not likely to affect the structural integrity of the profile. Flat roofs are more likely to be dented during a hail storm.
Sun
  • Steel does not hold onto heat, so a metal roof will cool down faster at night
  • Lighter colours will absorb less heat that dark colours, meaning a house will be cooler with a lighter roof. Colorbond® colours with exception of Night Sky® are treated with Thermatech® technology, which helps reflect thermal energy.
